RCOC Research Note Examines Emerging Maritime Cyber Risks

A new RCOC research note examines how increasing dependence on digital maritime systems is creating new cybersecurity risks for ports, vessels and maritime infrastructure.

RCOC has prepared a research note examining emerging cybersecurity risks affecting maritime operations, navigation systems, ports and other critical maritime infrastructure.

Modern maritime activity increasingly depends on interconnected digital systems. Vessel navigation, port logistics, cargo management, communications and maritime monitoring all rely on technology that can introduce operational vulnerabilities if systems are disrupted or compromised.

The research note examines how cyber incidents could affect maritime situational awareness, information integrity and operational continuity.

Particular attention is given to risks associated with compromised vessel information, interference with digital navigation, disruption of port systems and unauthorised access to maritime information platforms.

For a maritime information fusion centre, cybersecurity is closely linked to confidence in the information being collected and analysed.

Analysts must therefore consider not only what information is available, but also whether that information is reliable, complete and consistent with other sources.

The note encourages maritime institutions to strengthen cybersecurity awareness, improve information verification procedures and ensure that cyber-related incidents can be reported through appropriate national and regional channels.
